Safety is in the Future

Driving is an essential aspect of modern-day life. Whether it is to commute to work or school, running errands, or taking road trips, driving plays a significant role in our daily routine. However, the consequences of unsafe driving can be devastating, often leading to accidents, injuries, and fatalities. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 36,096 fatalities on US roads in 2019 alone. These staggering numbers highlight the critical need for driver education to reduce the number of deaths as a result of driving.

Driver education is essential in reducing the number of deaths related to driving. Through driver education programs, drivers are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to make better decisions and act responsible behind the wheel. Such courses aid in education drivers about traffic laws, road safety rules, defensive driving practices, and the danger of distracted driving, among other things. The public roads can also be a confusing path to maneuver through. For many new drivers, this can be a traumatic experience as they learn to navigate the nerve-wracking roads full of impulsive drivers. From a personal perspective, I remember during my first few days of driving, I would be frozen in the middle of the road with eyes as wide as a deer’s staring into the light of an oncoming car. Fortunately, my driving instructor was quick to react. Nevertheless, being placed in a position where my sympathetic nervous system skyrockets, and learning how to manage that on the road has allowed me to be a much more calm, aware, and focused driver on the road. None of this would have been possible without the driver education courses I attended that provided the necessary training and guidance to overcome these challenges and become a responsible driver.

Additionally, several steps can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving. Firstly, it is essential to implement strict traffic laws and regulations, as well as the enforcement of them. This includes increasing law enforcement to deter unsafe driving behaviors, such as speeding, distracted riving, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Secondly, providing accessible and affordable driver education courses and training programs to all drivers. Thirdly, promoting road safety awareness campaigns to raise awareness among drivers of all ages about the importance of responsible driving. As many drivers begin their experiences on the road during high school, it is important to have educational campaigns at high schools to provide informative insight regarding safety. Having younger generations become the pioneers of respectful driving etiquette, safety awareness, and formal training can greatly reduce the risk of accidents and death, as well as the culture around driving.

Unfortunately, I have witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of irresponsible driving. A few years ago, my childhood best friend was involved in a car accident caused by a reckless driver. The incident was a traumatic experience that left a deep impact on me. Witnessing the aftermath of such an accident made me realize the importance of responsible driving and the need for improved driver education to prevent such accidents from happening.

To be a better and safer driver, I have taken several steps to enhance my driving skills and knowledge. I have completed multiple driver education courses, including defensive driving courses, as well as regularly attending safe driving practices. As my father is an active Uber driver, he emphasizes the importance of attending these courses to stay up-to-date on safety practices, road regulations, and other pertinent information relative to road safety. Additionally, I always wear my seatbelt, never drink and drive, and avoid using my cell phone while driving. Furthermore, I have also been promoting responsible driving within my social circle, encouraging my friends and family to follow traffic laws and drive safely.

To help others become safer on the road, I believe that promoting road safety awareness is essential. We can educate our peers about safe driving practices, the dangers of distracted driving, and the importance of following traffic laws. As responsible drivers, we can also set an example for others to follow by always following traffic rules and driving responsibly.

As highlighted, driver education is an essential aspect of reducing the number of deaths related to driving. By prioritizing driver education, implementing strict traffic laws, and promoting road safety awareness campaigns, we can create a safer driving environment for everyone. As drivers, it is our responsibility to drive safely and follow traffic laws to prevent accidents and fatalities. Through continued education and promoting responsible driving practices, we can create a safer world for ourselves and others.
