The Big Blue Bus Accident

I was telling a fortune, “When you grow up, you will have 6 kids and marry…” And then everything went dark. Suddenly, I heard a terrified mother screaming, “Ellie! Ellie! Wake up!” The big blue school bus carrying my classmates, teacher, mother, and several other chaperones had crashed. I was told later it had been hit from behind and the driver of the bus who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time was unable to control it. I was only in second grade, and it was my first encounter with genuine fear. The image of the kids sitting in a circle outside the wreck will always be in my mind. This incident inflicted years of trauma and pain on many victims, including myself, all because a distracted teenager and an unrestrained bus driver failed to exercise caution.

Responsible driving has become of utmost importance to me. Each time we get behind the wheel, we put numerous lives at risk, not just our own but also those around us. I understood this concept at a young age. When I obtained my driver’s license at 16, I became excessively cautious, diligently studying every available manual and heeding my instructors’ advice. I refused to be the reason someone felt uneasy while riding on a school bus. However, it was driving classes that truly empowered me and helped me feel more comfortable on the road.

Driving classes equipped me with the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to operate a vehicle safely. Moreover, they taught fundamental concepts like traffic rules, defensive driving techniques, and hazard awareness. This enhanced my confidence and prepared me to navigate the challenges on the road. An integral part of my driving education emphasized the severe consequences of reckless, impaired, and distracted driving. This aspect resonated deeply with me and my classmates, instilling a sense of responsibility and a heightened understanding of others on the road. Education of this kind saves countless lives by promoting awareness of the consequences of driving and fostering responsible behavior.

To enhance overall road safety, various measures are needed. Coming from Rhode Island, a state known for its poor roads and overly polite drivers, I recognize the necessity for essential changes not only to road infrastructure but also to the driving culture. When I first learned to drive, a misunderstanding arose frequently, between me and friend regarding the “Rhode Island roll out,” where drivers block an entire lane of traffic when making a left turn from a side stop. Although my friend argued that it was legal and acceptable everywhere, I grew frustrated as it seemed obvious to me that blocking a lane of traffic was not okay or safe in Rhode Island let alone a state where this was not a common occurrence. Misunderstandings like this underscore the importance of driver education programs. Public awareness campaigns and educational initiatives targeting drivers and pedestrians are desperately needed everywhere, not just in states with excepted illegal road rules. These initiatives can promote safe practices and increase awareness of potential dangers. Additionally, improving road infrastructure and implementing clearer signage would enhance safety, particularly in states like Rhode Island, where navigating the roads can be a nightmare because the directions told me to go down this road that has been closed for six months due to repairs that will never be finished. Based on my experiences as both a passenger and a driver, I firmly believe that even a few changes to infrastructure and education can greatly improve lives and prevent accidents.

It is crucial for everyone to strive to become better and safer drivers. Prioritizing ongoing education and skill development is vital. This includes enrolling in advanced driving courses or defensive driving classes to enhance knowledge and abilities. Having nearly been involved in numerous accidents caused by irresponsible drivers, I understand the importance of personal experience in handling driving challenges. Practicing defensive driving techniques, such as maintaining a safe following distance, anticipating hazards, and scanning the road ahead, significantly reduces the risk of accidents. Remaining vigilant and avoiding distractions, like mobile phones, while driving is critical. Furthermore, promoting safe driving practices among friends and family by setting a positive example, avoiding the “Rhode Island roll out,” discussing road safety, and encouraging responsible behaviors contributes to creating a safer environment for everyone on the road. There is no single solution to transform everyone into perfect drivers, but a lifelong commitment to learning and improving is key.

The big blue bus accident I experienced in second grade often occupies my thoughts. I wonder why it occurred, what was going through the minds of the teenagers who collided with us, and why our bus driver neglected safety precautions. This traumatic event resulted in numerous health problems, and it continues to influence my mindset, especially when I’m driving near a school bus. It has taught me the significance of taking driving seriously and how every action on the road has consequences. It also has made me understand the importance of learning to drive properly and staying vigilant with practices and techniques. I aspire everyday to become a better driver and hope never to cause somebody the pain I have experienced.
