The Impact

People from all walks of life use a vehicle to commute to work, school, or just to take a relaxing evening drive. Driving safety should be at everyone’s priority, but unfortunately, it isn’t. Sure, commercials on tv or billboards on the freeway act as a communicator, but it takes oneself to make a decision- for the better or the worse.

Quite frequently, new drivers, who may not have the experience or skills to handle unexpected situations on the road make bad decisions. This is not intentional, but rather a state of fear and panic. After I read that one of my peers got into a fatal car crash at just the age of seventeen, I knew driving safety would be re-implemented. At school: an assembly on driver’s safety. On social media: hundreds of kids my age reposting and commenting on his friend’s and family’s instagram posts. In real life: not one word. No one spoke of him at school or even attempted to take action, rather there was silence. But deep down, we all knew the impact it caused.

Car crashes unfortunately take thousands of lives per year, leaving a large margin for error. Texting, drinking, and drug use take the top three prizes of being fatal while driving a vehicle. Not that they are winners, but they win the lives of many.

It is important for all new drivers to prioritize driving safety. This means following traffic laws and regulations, such as wearing a seatbelt, driving at a safe speed, and obeying traffic signals. It also means being aware of your surroundings and anticipating potential hazards, such as other drivers, pedestrians, and weather conditions.

One of the key ways to ensure driving safety is to avoid distractions while driving. This includes not using your phone while driving, avoiding eating or drinking while driving, and not engaging in other activities that take your attention away from the road. Distracted driving is a major cause of accidents, and it can have serious consequences for both the driver and other people on the road.

Driving safety has affected me personally in many ways. As a new driver, I am always nervous about getting behind the wheel for the first time. I know that I needed to take driving safety seriously, as the consequences of an accident could be severe.

As much as it is enforced, car safety is crucial for teens, and parents should take an active role in teaching their teens about car safety. Busy parents often overlook driving safety and only focus on teaching their child how to get from Point A to Point B. By emphasizing the importance of wearing a seatbelt, avoiding distractions while driving, and driving a safe vehicle, parents can help keep their teens safe on the road.
