Key Ways of Reducing Automobile Fatalities

No one wants to experience the heart-wrenching moment of receiving a devastating phone call or seeing a concerned uniformed stranger at their door. Unfortunately, this was the painful reality faced by the parents of two students at my high school. The loss of one daughter, pronounced dead at the crash scene, and the months of physical therapy and social challenges endured by another student deeply affected their lives. Witnessing a grieving parent being handed their daughter’s high school diploma at graduation is an indescribably heart-wrenching experience. Tragically, this was the exact scene that unfolded at the 2023 Amite High Magnet School graduation. One student’s life was cut short in a horrific manner due to a rainy day car accident that unfolded in the most devastating way imaginable. As the car attempted to navigate a curve at an excessively high speed, it flipped multiple times, collided with a tree, and continued its deadly rotation until a power pole came crashing down on the vehicle. The vivid description of the accident sounded like a scene out of the chilling movie “Final Destination”, but the painful reality was that it involved two students I had shared classes with. It is for these heart-wrenching reasons that driver education becomes so incredibly important. The prevention of such tragic deaths through proper driver education takes on an immense significance. It is our collective responsibility to take decisive actions and personal accountability to prevent these heartrending accidents from occurring.

There are three basic steps that can be taken to reduce driving-related deaths: choosing to be safe, improving road infrastructure, and choosing more age-appropriate vehicles. Ultimately a driver has to choose to be safe. In choosing to be safe, the driver will follow the traffic laws, avoid driving while distracted, and drive defensively. Driver education programs play a crucial role as they educate individuals on following traffic laws, speed limits, and safety rules, while also teaching defensive driving techniques and emphasizing the potential consequences of risky behaviors. By instilling safe driving habits from the beginning, driver education fosters responsible driving practices and encourages individuals to exercise caution while operating a vehicle. These programs equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions and prioritize safety on the road.

Through the sharing of real-life examples and statistics, driver education effectively demonstrates the serious consequences that arise from unsafe driving practices. By highlighting these outcomes, driver education encourages individuals to make responsible choices behind the wheel and prioritize safe driving behaviors. By instilling this awareness, driver education aims to reduce accidents and promote a safer driving culture among individuals on the road.

As mentioned above, a very simple step is to improve road conditions. When my mother was teaching me how to drive, she told me of a road that included a “dead man’s curve” which she warned me to be very careful about. Had my mother not received those warnings from her mother, there would be no way that I would know that there exists a road hazard. Some teens do not have this historical warning. Improving road infrastructure is a crucial step in reducing driving-related deaths. By implementing safety measures such as clear signage, well-maintained road surfaces, and appropriate lighting, the overall safety of roadways can be enhanced. This helps drivers navigate more effectively and react to potential hazards. Additionally, identifying and addressing high-risk areas, such as intersections with a history of accidents or roads prone to hazardous conditions, allows for targeted interventions and improvements to mitigate risks. By investing in road infrastructure improvements, we can create a safer environment for drivers, ultimately reducing the number of fatalities on the roads. Additionally, parents making more practical vehicle choices for their teens can also help reduce the number of teen driver related deaths.

My mom purchased me a 2009 BMW 128i. She purchased the car because of the price and low mileage. However when I think about it, this was not a practical choice for a teen. This car is turbocharged. It produces the desire to test the car out and show it to my friends. It isn’t just me, I see many students at my school driving Chargers, Camaros, Audis, and Challengers. I understand that parents now have more money than their parents had and they want us to have the things that they wished they had, however there was protection in them not having those flashy types of vehicles. While getting more advanced safety features on a car would be the ideal choice, it is not necessarily a practical choice as it appears that most teen first cars are used. Therefore the most efficient step to reducing teen driving related deaths is that we have self responsibility.

Another anecdote that my mother taught me while I was learning how to drive was that not only do I have to drive for myself but also for the other driver. That means that I have to constantly be aware and anticipate something happening while I am driving. We must increase our level of personal responsibility and accountability to ourselves, parents, and others. It must be normal to drive at or below the speed limit. It must be normal to put the cellphone away until the car is stopped or to pull over to a safe place to use the phone. Not only must these responsible choices be the norm, we must shun bad behavior and irresponsibility and enforce the laws that are on the books, especially hands free cell phone laws. These small changes can go far in decreasing the number of fatalities below the 34,000 that there were in 2022 and could help prevent another family from having to accept a posthumous diploma on behalf of their child.
