After a thrilling baseball game, my friend and I began our journey home as the sun set. Casting a warm golden glow over the landscape. Still buzzing with excitement, we eagerly climbed into his car. Ready to relive the highlights of the game. Little did we know that this drive would soon take an unexpected turn.

As we merged onto the highway the familiar hum of the engine blended with our excited chatter. My friend, who was in the driver’s seat, occasionally reached for his phone to find the perfect song for our drive. Playfully switching from one song to another we thought nothing of it, with music blasting from the speakers.

Our spirits soared as we cruised down the open road. Enveloped in a sense of freedom and adventure. However, fate had other plans for us on that eventful night. As we rounded a bend in the road our headlights illuminated a pair of luminous eyes staring back at us– it was a deer frozen in fear. Time seemed to stand still as my friend’s eyes darted from his phone to the road ahead. The impending danger became clear and panic washed over us like a chilling wave.

Without hesitation, he slammed on the brakes and brought the car screeching to a halt just inches away from colliding with the deer. Gasping for breath and with hearts pounding in our chests. We sat in stunned silence. The gravity of what had almost happened hit us like a ton of bricks– it shattered any sense of invincibility that had accompanied us throughout that exhilarating night.

In that moment we were reminded of just how fragile life is and how dangerous distractions can be. Steadying ourselves we carefully maneuvered past the bewildered deer which had scampered away into safety among the surrounding woods. The heaviness in our hearts filled up every corner of that car as newfound awareness settled upon us. Our thoughts shifted from reliving game highlights to the importance of being fully present in every moment, starting from that juncture onward.
