Driving: Education and Initiatives

In our current world, more and more people are changing their means of transportation from bicycles and public transportation to owning their own cars. This shift includes not only adults but also teens. Due to this change, there is a likelihood of many consequences and accidents occurring when a person becomes a driver, with the worst-case scenario being death. However, these accidents can be avoided through driver education.

The importance of driver education lies in its ability to reduce the number of deaths resulting from driving. Driver education programs provide instruction on traffic rules, road signs, and safe driving practices. By gaining knowledge and understanding, drivers can make informed decisions and develop a deeper awareness of potential risks and consequences associated with driving. These programs also offer opportunities for learners to develop practical driving skills under the guidance of qualified instructors, building confidence and competence to handle various road situations safely.

Driver education programs focus on developing hazard perception skills, enabling drivers to recognize potential risks and take appropriate actions to avoid or minimize them. They emphasize the importance of road safety, including concepts such as seatbelt usage, avoiding distractions, and the dangers of impaired driving. By raising awareness and promoting responsible behavior, driver education helps prevent accidents and reduce the severity of injuries in case of collisions, potentially saving lives.

There are steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving. Some of these steps can be implemented by governments, such as strengthening the enforcement of traffic laws and improving infrastructure and road design. Strengthening the enforcement of traffic laws ensures stricter penalties for traffic violations, particularly for offenses that pose significant risks to others’ safety, such as speeding, drunk driving, and reckless driving. Improving infrastructure and road design involves creating safer roads, intersections, and traffic calming measures, along with enhanced signage, road markings, and lighting to provide clear guidance to drivers and improve visibility.

On an individual level, practicing road safety skills and utilizing driver education and training can make a significant impact. By being mindful of road safety practices, such as avoiding distractions and not driving under the influence, drivers can better equip themselves to make informed decisions and avoid dangerous situations. Driver education and training help individuals develop skills in hazard recognition and risk assessment, enabling them to identify dangerous situations like impaired driving, distracted driving, or adverse weather conditions and adjust their driving behavior accordingly.

While I have never been in a car accident, I have witnessed my friends driving irresponsibly. When I was a freshman in college, currently a rising sophomore at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, I used to go out with my friends frequently due to the isolated nature of our campus. Since most of us didn’t have cars, we relied on carpooling with one friend who could drive. On one occasion, we were driving to get food in Syracuse, which was about an hour away from our campus. I was sitting in the front seat, and initially, the ride was smooth. However, my friend started being reckless with her driving. My friends and I noticed that she constantly used her phone to check messages, change songs, and engage in other distracting activities. We expressed our concern because we didn’t want to risk a crash, but she didn’t take us seriously. Instead, she thought it would be funny to start swerving the car occasionally. Although we knew she was joking, we were genuinely concerned that an accident could occur. After that incident, we told her that we didn’t feel comfortable getting back in the car with her if she continued to behave that way. She understood our concerns and never repeated those actions.

Reflecting on my personal encounter with reckless driving highlights the importance of taking proactive steps to enhance road safety, both for ourselves and others. To be a better and safer driver while also promoting road safety among others, different steps can be taken. People can follow traffic laws and regulations, which includes adhering to speed limits, traffic signals, and road signs, avoiding distractions such as phones, eating, or any other activities that take our attention away from the road, and being mindful of vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. Each of these steps can help people improve their driving skills and contribute to a safer road environment for everyone. Driving is truly a privilege, and it would not be fair if innocent bystanders had to suffer the consequences of a reckless driver.
