Questions We All Can Ask
Driving is the most dangerous activity almost the entire population willingly participates everyday in. If there was no education, no one could drive safely. When someone is educated on how they should drive, they can reduce the likelihood they find themselves in a dangerous situation. If they do end up in a dangerous situatioin, they can get out of it using the knowledge they gained from driving school to possibly save their lives. If everyone has the same drivers education, then we can better trust the other cars on the road.
Some steps that should be taken to reduce the number of deaths while driving is to not forget the basic questions we were taught to ask ourselves before getting behind the wheel. Some physical restrictions we should be on the lookout for are not being able to turn your neck to check your blind spot, having sore legs so braking is more difficult, and the most important, vision impairments. If you’re sleepy or have any medications that impair any of your 5 senses then all drivers should recognize these restrictions and choose a safer option than getting behind the wheel. Prevention is better than a cure and rather than trying to find your way out of a tough situation, don’t let yourself get into a situation by checking yourself. Knowing your limits is also within this realm of preparedness. If you know you get stressed easily and that driving has always been hard for you, know the steps necessary to deal with these problems before putting hands on the drivers wheel. These little mental and physical checks before going behind the wheel can save hundreds of lives.
I’ve been in a few car accidents and each time I get it, my heart rate jumps and my skin gets prickly. It is a scary moment, seeing a 2 ton vehicle made of pure metal come smashing into the back of your car. My first real car accidnt was were I was the passenger and a car rear ended my girlfriend at a stop light. The car wasn’t moving fast, maybe 15 mph, but it was enough to cause a scare. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw the car coming. I knew what was going to happen and before I could say anything, I heard and felt the thud and the clash of metal. We were rocked forward. My head hit the dashboard and it was all pretty scary. This definitely put into perspective how easy it is to get into an accident. It can happen to anyone at any time. There have also been times were I am in the car with my mom or dad and an accident has almost occured. I constantly remin my parents about texting and driving and how bad it is. My mom doesn’t listen and one time it almost cost her an accident. After that moment however, she has been much better about going on her phone. I’ve told my whole family about the driving mode on your phone and all of them use it everyday. I think this is an excellent option to have on always to help people become more focused on the road.
Some steps I could use to be a safer driver would be to have more patienc with other drivers and to always be aware of my surroundings. With these simple steps, I can create a safer environment for myself and for my passengers and these steps can also help other drivers become safer on the road. Patience is something we all can work on, especially when driving. Deciding to wait one more ligh cycle before making that dodgy unprotected left can save your life. Taking your time when you’re passing someone instead of cutting them off can save you from being rear-ended. Practicing patience is the most simple way all drivers can make the road safer. Another part of my driving that I need to work on is to constantly be checking my surroundings so I am always aware of my changing environment. This is especially true in places I don’t drive often. Being in a new environment, I don’t always know what to expect from other drivers so being aware of that is important. I can help other drivers become safer on the road is to lead by example. When I am driving someone, I can practice patience and awareness. If I practice these virtues enough, then hopefully I can rub off onto other drivers. Leading by example is the best way we can help make all roads safer.
