Safe Driving and Me
Title: The Path to Safer Roads Begins With Us: A Comprehensive Approach to Driver Safety
In this era, where speed seems to trump safety, I am passionate about influencing fellow citizens to become safer drivers. Ensuring safety on the roads encompasses more than just following road rules; understanding human psychology, effective communication, and empathy play significant roles in this mission.
What is the importance of driver education in reducing the number deaths as a result of driving? I think that it is very important to have proper instructions. I, like many others, took driver’s education, but before that my father taught me how to drive. Learning the ‘rules of the road’ from my dad then learning the reality of how the rules are in real life was vastly different. It made it harder to learn the real rules, and to be a safe driver.
What steps can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving? I personally think that drivers should relearn the rules of the road regularly. Whether this means retesting or annual classes regarding the rules of the road, I feel both would significantly help drivers. I feel that if we as drivers are reevaluated and reeducated annually we would be able to significantly decrease the number of deaths related to poor driving.
Have you ever had an experience of being in car accident or have seen your friends or family members driving irresponsibly? I have seen the outcome of many accidents, from both family and friends. My mom got into a big accident totaling her car. I took her to the hospital a few times afterwards, and I could see the pain on her face. I also more recently saw first hand my boyfriend’s parents after they got into an accident. A driver ran a red light and they got T-Boned, also totaling their car. I sat with my boyfriend in the ER waiting for the doctors to say if his parents were alright. Both of these accidents have made me a more precocious driver.
What steps can you take to be a better and safer driver as well as help others become safer on the road? I am already in a program to help myself and those around me. In my school we have a program called KKAD25 which stands for Keep Kids Alive Drive 25. This program was started by a girl whose brother was struck and killed by a driver doing 55 in a 25. We go around our community and do different events to help kids and adults alike understand how to drive safely, and what the consequences of not driving safely could be.
My interest in psychology aids me in understanding why people behave the way they do, and how this understanding can be used to encourage safer driving habits. It is not enough to know the rules; understanding the underlying causes of risk-taking behavior is crucial in crafting more effective policies and interventions.
Having an English major allows me to effectively communicate these policies and safer habits to my peers and the broader public. As we know from many business strategies, promoting a message powerfully and engagingly to the masses is half the work done.
Moreover, my aspiration to major in Nursing reflects my deep-rooted empathy and respect for life. Being exposed to the aftermath of traffic incidents would enable me to serve better as an advocate for road safety. It would strengthen my motive to prevent such incidents from happening in the first place, creating safer environments for our present and future communities.
My application to Business is driven by my intention to conceive, plan, and implement effective strategies to make our roads safer. Learning about organizational behavior, leadership, and innovation fuel my ambition to push forward changes in how we perceive and practice safety on the roads.
Being a safer driver is about acknowledging our responsibility to protect lives when we are behind the wheel. There is a momentous need to spread this message in our society effectively, and I believe that through my multidisciplinary academic interests and consistent dedication to road safety, I can make a meaningful difference.
I am thankful for the opportunity provided by the National Driving and Traffic School to submit this application for the Driver Education Initiative Award. I genuinely believe that by dedicating resources and efforts to driver safety education, we can collectively create a safer driving environment.
It is us who shape the roads of tomorrow, and every step we take towards safer driving, no matter how small it may seem, will contribute significantly to that cause. We can, and we should, strive to be safer drivers not only for ourselves, but also for our families, friends, and fellow citizens sharing the road.
