Be
the Leader, Set the Example, and Save Lives

The
importance of a drivers ed in reducing the number of fatal
car accidents is the difference between a life cut short and a life
long lived. Accidents are called accidents for a reason, but that
still doesn’t take away the fact that they devastate families.
According to the Association for Safe International Road Travel,
“nearly 1.25 million people die in road crashes each year, on
average 3,287 deaths a day”.

Reducing
the number of deaths on the road starts with making sure new drivers
are educated from the very start. One thing that seems to guide youth
in the correct direction stems from attending a driving school in
contrast to the latter choice of learning from a family member. While
it may prepare the student for driving to a certain degree, there
truly are so many more rules and tips that can be gained up when
learning from an accredited driving instructor. Personally, I took a
driving class and always tend to feel like a safer driver in
comparison to others who I know learned from a parent. It often
reaches a point where I wouldn’t feel comfortable with my friends
driving as I know they probably don’t know all there is to know
about driving safety. It’s scientifically proven that humans learn
to a deeper extent when it’s absorbed through more than one medium,
such as writing, listening, watching, and talking amongst peers. This
is why I say in-classroom driving lessons as the best option.

While
I have been fortunate enough to have not been in a car crash, I’ve
sat nervously through close-call stories relayed to me from friends
and family. They always seem as though they’re something that could
never happen, but humans tend to have the habit of thinking, “it’ll
never be me”, until it
is
them living through the aftermath of an accident. They don’t happen
for no reason either; there’s always something that someone did
wrong in order for it to happen. Whether they knew what they did was
wrong or not, they still did it which means that they weren’t fully
educated on the laws and consequences of the road.

To
make myself and others safer drivers, I will first make sure that
I
am not a distraction. Allowing the driver to focus on their task at
hand, instead of laughing with friends and looking at pictures on
phones, ensures that they’ll be prepared for any and all situations
that they may face. It’s also important to make sure that you
always lead by example. If you’re speeding, it’s more likely that
others around you will as well. Be the leader, set the example, and
save lives.
