Drivers ed Essay

In the United States, the number one cause of teenage death in the
nation is reckless driving. This includes anything from speeding,
drunk driving, or cell phone use while driving. In 2011, 2,650 teens
between the ages 16-19 were killed due to reckless driving. Reckless
teen drivers are a huge risk to not just themselves but innocent
drivers on the road who are only thinking of going from one place to
another, to hopefully make it home to their loved ones.

Teenage drivers don’t always pay attention to the importance of
reckless driving and the consequences that come from it. They are
easily distracted by friends, music and their cell phones. Even
though not all accidents can be prevented, drivers ed can
potentially decrease the number of teens killed in car accidents and
teenagers can learn basic rules on the road and understand their
importance. They can practice driving with driving simulators and
experience what happens when you drive recklessly. Drivers ed
teaches you to be more attentive on the road and pay attention to
your surroundings. It gives you a chance to get more practice driving
so you can fix the mistakes you’ve made in the past and become a
better driver.

From personal experience, I have witnessed my sister talking on the
phone while driving and almost getting into an accident because of
it. Even though nothing happened, it was one of the scariest moments
of my life. Using your phone while driving is extremely dangerous
becuase you aren’t just putting yourself in danger, but you are
putting the passengers with you and other innocent people on the
road.

Since 2009, each year there was a law banning cellphone use while
driving, but that hasn’t stopped many people from using their
phones. If we take some time to put any distractions to the side
while we’re driving, it would decrease the number of deaths caused
by reckless driving tremendously. Individually, some steps I can take
to be a better and safer driver as well as help others become safer
on the road is to put away any distractions before driving and
warning the person who is driving me to put away their cell phone so
they don’t get distracted. We as a community can put up signs
related to reckless driving around the neighborhood and show the
importance of drivers ed. Also, driver ed teachers can show
students the consequences of reckless driving by showing them real
life situations of people who experienced it.

In conclusion, we cannot stop the number of teenage deaths caused by
reckless driving but we can reduce it by a great amount if we just
take a few necessary steps like remembering to put away any
distractions before driving. We can also decrease the number of teen
deaths caused by reckless driving and bring awareness to it through
the use of drivers ed. Drivers ed will teach teenagers
basic driving rules and teach them to not have any distractions while
driving.
