It’s
Time to Make a Change

Today
driving has become ubiquitous, almost everybody has a car, and many
children dream of one day receiving their drivers license.
Unfortunately, these young drivers are also growing up watching
movies like

The Fast and The Furious
,
and have adults in their life who haven’t learned the importance of
seatbelts. The number one thing a child can learn in a Drivers Ed
classroom is that seatbelts and helmets save lives and that the
movies they are watching aren’t real. We need to take action by
re-educating the elderly who have a major influence on today’s
younger generations. The grandparents are the ones that did not grow
up having seatbelts and are accidentally leading these young children
down the wrong path. With many occupations, employees are learning
new skills to better accomplish their task at hand; therefore, an
argument can be made to do this with driving knowledge as well – for
everyone’s safety. My connection to driving safety comes through the
loss of my grandmother. Ever since I was a little girl my grandmother
was the person I aspired to be. I dreamed of being just like her,
from being able to walk into a room and make conversation with every
person to being 5’8”. My grandma was a courageous and strong
woman and everyone who knew her loved her. She passed away a few
years ago in a motorcycle accident and since then, whenever I see a
person on a motorcycle not wearing a helmet I plead to them to think
of the younger generations and the children who adore them. Although
my grandmother was wearing a helmet during her accident she was still
declared brain dead and we had to let her go far too early. My aunt
gave birth to my cousin Henry less than a month later. He never met
this amazing woman due to tragedy, and I will use my story to help
prevent this from happening to anyone else. My grandma was in her 50s
at the time of the accident. She had just retired and was going on a
short vacation before moving to live closer to my family. Our whole
world was shaken that day; it was far too early for her to go. This
is not the only story I have to tell and it is far from as horrible
as it could have been, but it is my story. I’m a senior this year. I
have lost most of my time with my classmates due to the outbreak of
COVID-19 and I still wish my grandma could be here to see my last day
at school. Regardless, the most important thing is that every one of
my classmates is present and all of their beloved family members will
be there. I hope that through my story the proper precautions are
taken in the drivers ed and the world decides to make a
change. For example, changing rules that say by law you are not
required to wear a helmet.
