Lead
the Way

Did
you know that vehicular accidents are one of the major causes of
fatalities in the world? Statistics show that the numbers are rising
as each year passes. Unfortunately, many don’t realize that
accidents are called “accidents” because they weren’t planned;
in a snap, they can just happen! Fortunately, there are a few ways
we can try to prevent them from happening.

Drivers
should be focused and alert while on the road. Be conscious of the
road they’re on, be knowledgeable of the directions and upcoming
turns or anticipated stops, and try not to think of stressful matters
that may cause a driver’s mind to drift away from their commute.

Drivers
should also create an atmosphere conducive to driving while in the
car with passengers. Conversations should be kept light and to a
minimum as well as the noise level. If the radio must be on, it
should be kept at the lowest level so that the driver can remain
focused and most importantly any emergency vehicles can clearly be
heard.

Finally,
drivers should always drive defensively. You can’t automatically
assume that drivers close to you are going to follow the rules of the
road. You should anticipate that at any given moment they can make
sudden sways, turns or stops that will have an effect on your driving
path. Mindful drivers can be on “guard” with their reflexes ready
to avoid a potentially serious situation.

In
sum, drivers can lead the way to a safer trip if they remain focused
and alert, create a quiet and controlled atmosphere while driving
with passengers, and if they drive defensively. Many lives can be
saved if drivers took the initiative and led the way safely.
