How to Promote Safe Driving

Driver’s
education is important for young drivers to take. A common
misconception about drivers ed is that they only teach you
how to safely operate a vehicle, but they actually teach you much
more than that. They teach you how to be safe on the road. Driving is
similar to learning a different language. Drivers ed
teachers are like language teachers expect the material they teach
could end up saving you or somebody else’s life. They teach you the
signs of the road, how to avoid other driver’s mistakes, what to do
in emergencies, etc. Without drivers ed, I would not have
become as successful as a young driver today. Usually, when teenagers
first start driving, they are very anxious and nervous. Having a
drivers ed teacher next to you that can correct your driving
mistakes is a crucial point in developing a teenagers emotional
connection to driving. If you are always nervous when you drive,
mistakes can be made more easily. Drivers ed teachers help
to ease the driver while also giving out helpful tips to improve
their driving skills.

Another way to help
reduce the deaths from driving accidents is to promote not texting or
drinking while driving. At my school, around the time of prom, we had
a drunk driving simulation. We watched what happened in a staged but
realistic drunk driving accident. It was very informative and
emotional. Personally, the effects of drinking and driving were now
ingrained into my brain because of that crash simulation. Another
thing that my school did was host a texting while driving virtual
reality setup. Students got to experience how hard it was to
attentively drive and text. Both of these ways are measures that can
be taken to help prevent distracted and irresponsible driving.

I have been in a
situation where the person driving was driving irresponsibly. The
driver’s girlfriend was in the front seat of the car and I was in
the back with my best friend. The driver was constantly looking over
at his girlfriend as she was showing him pictures on her phone. At
one point, he was even texting and driving. When I looked at the
speedometer, I saw that he was going 112 miles per hour. We all told
him to slow down and he had not realized that he was going that fast
because he was driving distracted. This happened at least three more
times, and when we finally got to a rest atop, my other friend drove
the rest of the way home. The original driver was not happy, but I
knew that I had done the right thing by not letting him drive
anymore.

To this day, I take
steps to become a more careful driver. I always check my vehicle to
make sure that everything is working properly before I leave. I
always have my phone on do-not-disturb while driving, and I never
drive intoxicated. If you take these steps everyday, you can start to
become a safer driver.
