Lives are at Stake
Why
rush to your friend’s birthday party then be a few minutes late? Do
you really have to speed? Was that text really important? My teacher
who was hit in a car accident wishes that her old student wasn’t as
distracted by all these actions above. She was hospitalized for a
year, with struggles to talk due to a teen trying to make their
friend’s party on time. Many members of our society break the laws
of the road everyday and as our technology advances, the dangers of
cars will become more prevalent.
In
order to protect yourself, members in your car, and others in your
car, you need to drive as if an accident can happen at any moment.
Use landmarks to judge how far you are from the car ahead. When the
car ahead passes an object like a sign, count to three. If you get to
three before your car passes it, you will not react fast enough if
they break suddenly. When you are changing lanes, turn your blinker
on then use your mirrors to check for cars. Slowly merge into your
lane and turn your blinker off. Stay in the right lane on the highway
and only use the left to pass if you feel unsafe driving behind
another car. Whenever you’re on the road, be cautious of other
members on the road.
Drivers
cannot be distracted by the passengers in their car. If you are
operating a car with other members, you must remember the road is
priority rather than a conversation with your friend. A simple
conversation can distract a driver for an insignificant amount yet
end up with a destroyed car and hurt people because of the
distraction. The lives of you and your passengers are important as
well as other drivers and pedestrians.
In
summary, Drivers need to remember lives are on the line when you
break the law or drive recklessly. An easy act of speeding or running
a red light can cause years of grief and tragedy. You must always use
your common sense when operating a vehicle and not be distracted by
friends or devices. Every second you pull your eyes off the road, the
chances of an accident increase exponentially. Remember to consider
others on the road and the lives you risk at any distraction or
unsafe driving.
