Mobility,
security and responsibility belongs to everyone.

“Nearly
1.25 million people die inroad crashes each year, on average 3,287
deaths a day” (Association for safe International Road Travel,
2020)

I
am from Colombia and I have been driving for approximately 5 years
and fortunately I have never had an accident. Traffic in most Latin
American countries is bad, you have to be very careful on the road
because people do not have the sense of responsibility and kindness
as I have seen here in United States.

Accidents
can happen at any moment, whether you just turn to look to your right
when it was to the left, or just get distracted for 30 seconds
looking at something inside your car. The sense of responsibility of
drivers throughout the world must be very very great, since you not
only put your life at risk, but the lives of the people who go in
your car, which may be your family and even the life of people who do
not know and have nothing to do with you. Some victims fall by
mistake of others.

I think that the most important
strategy when it comes to showing responsibility is when we teach new
drivers how to drive, because you can tell them what is the
importance of this, how you can feel comfortable and, how can you
contribute to improve the world that we fear, because just by letting
a car pass, it is a sense of kindness and respect for the other. You
should not always think about the first me, second me and third
others. Also, as a second measure, we must give an example to others,
an act of solidarity and respect can make the other person launch
themselves too. Big changes can be made from person to person.

I
have listened to people who have had car accidents for different
reasons, “it was snowing and the wheel was knocked off”, “I
saw the phone for three seconds”, “my dad turned to look
for 1 second” “I lost control of the car because it was
very fast”, “just take a drink”, etc. After all this
has happened, they realize that driving is a very big responsibility
for the safety of themselves and that of other people.

In
my country there are many awareness campaigns, the police simulate an
accident on the highway, where you can see bloody dolls and a
destroyed car; that is an image that impacts drivers a lot, that is
how we think twice whether to have a drink or drive faster because we
want to get there quickly, it is just as important to greet our
family who are waiting for us at home.

Let’s
not put our lives or the lives of others at risk, let’s get home
safe.
