One Drive at a Time

Oh,
the joys of getting to start to drive! A whole new chapter of your
life has begun. Where to go? Who to go with? Going to the movies, the
park, anywhere; this is a new freedom. As constantly repeated as it
is, with great power comes great responsibility. Driving is a great
responsibility indeed, which is why learning how to drive responsibly
is very important in maintaining our safety as well as the safety of
others! The importance of drivers ed in reducing the number of
deaths as a result of driving is that we are teaching the upcoming
drivers to respect and obey the laws which help keep us and others
safe from harm. Drivers ed is essentially to help all drivers
learn the rules of the road, when it is safe for them to turn, when
to signal, what to do in certain situations. At the end of the day,
it is all about the safety of ourselves and others, after all, we are
each very important! Some steps which can be taken to reduce the
number of deaths related to driving is actively staying focused on
the road, not focusing on distractions, lowered music volume, and
being attentive. Not being distracted is a humongous preventer in
accidents especially when driving, always keep your eyes on the road.
Many car accidents are caused by people being distracted so the
choice we make to not be distracted will lead to less driving related
accidents in the future. Also, by lowering music volume, you are a
little more aware of yourself, your car and what is going on around
you. Thankfully, I have never been in a car accident, but I do
remember a time one of my friends was driving and a car rear ended
her car. No one was hurt, but the driver was distracted, and they
were about to enter the freeway so it was entirely possible that that
driver could have continued on and hurt way more people. Some steps
that I can take to be a better driver is definitely not looking at my
phone, even taking your eyes off the road for 3 seconds is very
dangerous, so it is best to keep your phone off your person and keep
your eyes on the road. Another thing that can help people become more
safe drivers is to slow down, sometimes people tend to go fast
unnecessarily which increases the risk of harm. So, by slowing down,
we can assure ourselves that we are in control of the car and
minimize potential harm to ourselves and others. At the end of the
day, driving is fun, but we must remember to always drive safe and
carefully, conscious of ourselves and the people around us.
