Knowledge Equals Less Deaths

One
of the things teenagers coming into high school are looking forward
to is to finally be able to drive, to be independent and free. To
have this freedom, they will go through the Drivers ed
course at their school. The most important lesson taught throughout
the course is to drive safely. The number of car accidents, deaths
caused by motor vehicles, and pedestrian injuries and deaths are
staggering. The Drivers ed course is important because it
emphasizes that the rate of car accidents and fatalities is
staggering, and teaches its students how to properly drive as well as
watching for your own and others’ safety.

The
Drivers ed course, along with the behind-the-wheel training
after the class, is essential for beginning drivers to learn the
basics. In the class, students learn the ins-and-outs of what to
expect when driving on the road, such as road signs, how to drive the
car defensively, vehicle maintenance, and strategies to follow in
emergency situations. It teaches the students what to expect and how
to deal with the unexpected, paving the way for them to be safe
drivers. As for the behind-the-wheel training, it gives the students
the opportunity to take what they learned into action and get a taste
of what it is like to be on the road. The Drivers ed course
is important because it teaches students how to be safe drivers, what
to look for and what to do when a situation occurs, lowering the risk
of a car accident if they hadn’t taken the course.

I
believe that taking the Drivers ed course is essential to
lowering the rate of driving-related fatalities, but there should be
other requirements established. Making the Drivers ed
course more rigorous may be beneficial. Many if not all students pass
the course, mainly because it’s not a very hard class to pass if
you pay attention. Implementing stricter laws with harsher
punishments may also make drivers more aware of their mistakes,
paying more mind to what they were doing to escape a heavy fine or
punishment. To lower the rate of driving-related fatalities, making
the course harder and longer, and having stricter laws may result in
a lower rate of driving-related fatalities as they are putting more
effort and time into learning.

The
Drivers ed course is a step towards teenagers becoming
better drivers because it teaches safety techniques in risky
situations. Not only do the students learn about road signs, traffic
laws, and vehicle maintenance, but also red flags to look for along
with defensive driving. Students may have caught on on irresponsible
driving by their parents or older siblings, so taking the course
enables them to learn from a blank canvas. The course may be a
stepping-stone towards lowering driving fatalities, but I believe
that making the course harder and implementing stricter laws would be
beneficial. In the meantime, drivers need to be mindful when on the
road, as they’ve got family and goals that have not been fulfilled.
