How
do you Prepare for an Accident?
It was
mid-afternoon in the rural town of Estancia, New Mexico, and my
family got a phone call that my cousin had been in an accident. When
we arrived at his house to make sure everything was okay the detail
was released that he was hit by a female who was driving with a
suspended license. A foggy January morning my younger sister was
driving to morning workouts, and was T-boned by an older man who
hadn’t been paying attention to the road, and luckily she survived.
January 14, 2020 a car accident took the lives of two teenage
brothers in Stanley, New Mexico on their way to lift. The boys were
16 and 14 years old with a provisional. It has been the biggest
tragedy my town has ever seen, and it was all due to inexperienced
driving. The Drivers Ed course is considered boring in so many
students’ eyes, but it is so crucial to the safety on the road.
Without these classes the mass death toll could reach millions rather
than the tragic thousands we experience every year. I just described
three situations in the past year that have been dangerous and life
threatening, and the scariest part is that each situation was sprung
out of inattentive driving. Accidents happen, but without the proper
knowledge they would be more frequent. Driving is a serious skill
that requires much focus and attention. Drivers Ed is crucial in
terms of teaching one the rules of the road, and teaching one what to
do in order to be the safest on the road that they can be. Without
drivers ed my cousin and sister may have lost their lives, but
with the knowledge of how to position the car on impact and following
the rules they are still alive. However, I have noticed that many
Drivers ed courses in schools do not have any hands on
training. It has been proven that most people get their first ticket
within their first year of driving. There is only so much one can
teach in a classroom to prepare students for a major responsibility.
I feel one way to improve education in driving is to give students
hands on experience to help them get more comfortable at the wheel.
Yes, I may be guilty of speeding or not using my blinker. However,
with the tragedy I have seen I as a person want to become an advocate
for safe driving, and education. Not only do I practice safe driving
individually, I also promote safe driving amongst my friends. Driving
is freedom, but that freedom is nothing without education for
education is power.
