Driver
education plays an important role in producing safe drivers on the
road. But the classes are not being taken seriously. In Hawai’i,
many 16 to 17-year-olds enroll in drivers ed. Not to learn and
implement safe driving skills, but to gain access to legally sitting
behind the wheel faster. Because of this, reckless driving happens
every day where I am from. As a fellow student driver, I have
experienced other students driving carelessly through the narrow
roads in and around school campus. At our school, it is a tradition
to have people engage in a “Senior Burnout” which consists of
many seniors (and some juniors) showcasing their modified cars,
revving their engine while staying in place, creating smoke that
surrounds the area. This goes to show our drivers ed programs
are not effective enough for the future safety of life on the road.
This is why drivers ed programs should become stricter when it
comes to the completion of its program. 

From
experience, I have witnessed a reckless driver almost take their life
along with mine. As I was driving on the H3 of Honolulu, Hawai’i.
It was the beginning of rush hour around 3 pm. I would say I was in
front of the traffic build-up because the roads were quite clear in
front of me. Coming home from Diamond Head in my 2009 corolla, I spot
a fellow corolla on my left front. Driving for a few minutes going
Westbound, and the fellow corolla decides to switch lanes. But the
driver was not the only one wanting to get into the same lane. Two of
them decided to change at the same time causing the fellow corolla to
act fast.

Practicing
safe driving and actually being cautious on the road is very
important to me because reaction times on the road are an important
factor when driving. Others will have a longer reaction period than
others meaning they act later towards danger. When driving on the
road, it is important to not only think of yourself, but others
around us.
