Saves Lives
In
recent years, new cars come with similar features that enforce safe
driving no matter who is behind the wheel. These include backup
cameras, cruise control and detectors that slow down if you are
driving too close to another vehicle. This is great and all, but
those that have older cars without these tools are the ones that have
a higher chance of being involved in an accident. A solution to lower
the amount of driving related deaths in the U.S is to provide an
attachable version of this new technology. If someone cannot afford a
new model car, then they can purchase distance detectors for a
fraction of the price. Now some items such as attachable backup
cameras have already been invented, but not all of these have. The
bottom line is that we know that no human is perfect, and that is
when technology comes in to fill the gaps that humans cannot.
Compared to this technology our reaction time is far slower than
anything that is specifically designed to do the task that is being
asked. People can always argue that drivers ed is important for
preventing accidents, which it is, but when you add the help of a
machine, the benefits may shock some. Adding onto a car is not only
safe for a new teen driver, it does just as much justice for a grown,
more experienced adult.
The
hardest part of driving is being able to defend yourself from a
reckless driver and when technology sends you signals and alerts it
is doing half of the job for you. This edge allows drivers to focus
their attention on the road and not becoming the person that
instructors tell teens to look out for. I know a few people that have
been in car accidents and the ones that had technology on their side
said the collision would have been much worse if technology was not
there to help. The others were involved in a wreck where one person
had died from rear ending their car. I later found out that his 2008
model did not have detectors of any kind. So as cars become smarter
and more advanced we should see a shift in the statistics of car
accidents and death related to these accidents.
