Driving: The Undetected Life Saver

Driver
education is extremely important in reducing the number of deaths
caused by driving. If one driver does not know what they are doing,
they endanger everybody around them. Almost every adolescent will say
that, if they were allowed, they would know how and be able to drive.
I remember as a kid believing that all it took was a press of a pedal
and a turn of the wheel. On the contrary, when I became of age and
received my permit and then my license, I began to realize there’s
more to it than that. Some find driving scary, some find it
thrilling, and still more are completely indifferent about it, yet
all drivers alike should deem it a gift and treat it as such.

Though
I have never gotten into an accident while I was the driver, I have
been in a couple as a passenger. The one I distinctly remember is
when I was out with my dad. We had just watched a movie at the
theater and were on our way home. I was trying to convince him to
take me to Dairy Queen for ice cream when we came to a four-way stop.
He waited his turn then began crossing the intersection. Suddenly, a
car came flying out of nowhere, drove through the stop sign, and
rammed us from the side. Thankfully, nobody was hurt, yet the
experience was impressed on my mind for a lifetime.

There
are many steps you and I can take as individuals to do our part in
reducing the number of deaths related to driving. First things first,
we need to pay more attention! Quite a number of accidents are caused
because either one or both drivers were not aware of the other.
Secondly, if undecided about whether or not you can make it, don’t
even try! Some people aren’t sure if they can make the turn in time
so they hesitate, considering, then decide to try, but by that time
it is too late and they are in a wreck. Finally, put distractions
away from you while driving. Whether it is texting, calling,
listening to the radio, or even conversing with passengers, if it
distracts you from paying attention to the road, stop doing it.
