The Importance of Drivers ed

The
Importance of Drivers ed

It
was a late night and there was a terrible storm outside, I was in the
passenger seat of my friend’s car. The next thing I knew he took a
turn too fast and hydroplaned into a sign. The airbags deployed and
my nose began to bleed. The car is totaled but everyone in the car is
okay. This situation could have been worse, but it could have also
been avoided with responsible driving and recollection of driver
education. According to the Association for Safe International Road
Travel, approximately 1.25 million people die in road crashes each
year. That is why it is important to ensure that drivers go through
proper steps to acquire their license because without adequate
knowledge of the rules of the road the number of deaths may increase.
There are some things that can change to ensure that new drivers are
able to learn the rules of the road. I strongly recommend that online
driving schools need to be stricter, it’s easy just to skim through
the course and lie about your driving log. If online students were
required to go to the DMV for a test after every online unit this
would ensure that they understand the material that the unit is
teaching. Also if new drivers had an option to have a driving school
at their public schools this would allow students to better learn the
material compared to an online class. Being able to have a proper
drivers ed before even getting on the road will ensure that
new drivers have a good foundation for when they get on the road.
This foundation will help reduce the number of deaths due to car
accidents. As a driver myself, I took these online classes to get my
license and treated them as any teenager does, I blew them off. In
my first few months driving, I had to learn safe and proper driving
by making mistakes and thankfully correcting them without hurting
myself or others. This was not only unsafe for me but everyone else
on the road. This led to me doing my own research on the rules of the
road because now, driving on the roads alone I better understood the
importance of driver safety. Also when I took trips with experienced
drivers, I would pay more attention and ask questions, learning from
the way they drove. This should have taken place during driver
education but being young and not understanding the importance of
drivers ed led to me having to learn it later when I was
already on the road. Now with the knowledge I possess now, I am able
to pass this down to my younger siblings, and other upcoming drivers,
when they drive with me. By spreading this knowledge to my younger
siblings I’m not just making the roads safer for them and the
future generation but everyone that drives on the same roads as they
do.
