Rolling Down the Street in
my 4,000 Pound Car of Metal Destruction”

When
I first got my license, I was super excited because I could drive
anywhere I wanted without asking my parents to drive me. Little did I
know of the insurance, gas and maintenance that came with it.
Drivers ed is extremely important when you start driving. I
think the most important aspect of learning to drive is the rules of
the road. Without knowing the rules of the road, the death rate
caused by driving would be significantly higher.

The
main problem I see today with driving is people on their cell phones.
A car is a 4,000+ pound vehicle of pure metal and you will lose
control if you are not paying attention. It only takes 1 second of
looking at your phone to get in a crash. Nothing is so important that
you have to risk the lives of yourself and others. Get off your
phone, it can wait.

Along
with cell phones, distracted and under the influence (of anything)
driving is extremely unsafe. I have been in a rear-end pile up of 4
cars. Luckly, my family was in the front of the line so we only
sustained damage to our trunk door. The other 2 cars in the middle
were not so lucky. Both cars in the middle had their engines smashed
in and one person had to go to the hospital because they had broken
their neck. The man who crashed into us had been under the influence
of marijuana and had been arguing with his wife as he was driving.

Whenever
I drive, I always turn my phone to the “Do Not Disturb” setting
and put it in my center glove box so I can’t see or look at it
while I drive. Being a safe driver and respecting the rules of the
road are the two most important things when learning to drive.
Nothing is so important that you have to look away from the road and
endanger others.
