Importance of Drivers ed

Driver
education plays a large role in protecting road safety. With driving
comes huge responsibility and most young teens about to get their
licenses may not realize this. Drivers ed can explain the
responsibility that actually comes with operating a vehicle. It is
important because if one is properly educated on the harmful effects
and potential fatalities irresponsible driving can have, they would
likely be a safer driver which would reduce deaths caused by driving.
A good step that could reduce deaths relating to driving could be
implementing drivers ed as a requirement in schools as even
though it is an option most students decide to opt out of the course.
If every student is required to participate in drivers ed, it
will create a generation of safer drivers. Another step that could
reduce driving related deaths could be educating teenagers on the
effects of texting and driving. As a teenager the temptation to send
a quick text while driving could be hard to resist, however, if
students are given more resources revealing the actual effects of
this action, it could deter texting and driving and in turn reduce
driving related deaths. Personally, I have been in a car accident
while driving and it was due to another driver’s irresponsible
driving. The driver ignored the ‘no u-turn’ sign and it caused a
crash. This was devastating as my car was totaled and I was scarred.
I think some steps that I could take to become a safer driver would
be to pay attention to speed limit signs more often. Sometimes it is
difficult to remember what the specific speed limit is and that can
be dangerous as I could end up driving significantly slower or faster
than the other cars on the road which could potentially cause a
crash. Another step I could take to improve my driving would be to
not pay as much attention to my radio. It only takes a few seconds of
lost focus to cause a collision and although it does not feel as if
it takes a long time to change the station, it could be the reason
for a crash. A step I could take to help improve my friends driving
would just be to give them friendly reminders to stay off their
phone. I could also offer to help them navigate if they need a GPS so
that their focus can remain on the road.
