Drivers ed: The Cure
Driver
education is crucial in reducing the deaths caused by car accidents.
It is the one thing in between people getting onto public roads
where, if not trained properly, they can be a danger to everyone
driving. According to driverknowledge.com, 53% of accidents that
result in death are caused by speeding and reckless driving. Propper
driving education can inform new drivers about the dangers of not
driving responsibly and teach them the correct way to drive.
A
step that can be taken to reduce driving related deaths is requiring
all people to take drivers ed. Knowing that people over the age of 17
and ½ do not need to take any drivers ed courses makes me feel
a little uneasy. They just need to demonstrate the skills to pass the
DMV test. There are many situations that do not occur during the
driving test that can be life or death in real life scenarios, and we
do not know if they are prepared for those situations. This is why I
think that the biggest step that can be taken to reduce deaths caused
by driving is educating everyone seeking a license.
Surprisingly
I have been the passenger of a couple of car accidents. One of my
earliest memories is getting into a car accident which resulted in
our car flipping multiple times. My family was heading down a
mountain and the roads were extremely windy. A car that was heading
up the mountain crossed the line onto our side of the road which
caused my dad to swerve to avoid a head on collision, causing our car
to flip. The police officers told us that if our car was lighter we
would have continued rolling eventually over the cliff. I am not sure
if the driver coming up was going too fast and ended up taking the
turn wide or he did not see a car coming because of the curve, but
both of these reasons would not have happened if the driver was
educated on driving on extreme roads. Educating the driver could have
prevented this happening.
There
are many steps I can take to be a better and safer driver. I can make
sure I put my phone on do not disturb before I start my car to
prevent any distractions. All of my radio controls, adjusting my
seat, and climate control can be set to what I want before I start
driving. Always checking over my shoulder and following the speed
limit are super effective in being a safe driver. I can also help
people I know become safer on the road by sharing with them quick
facts and tips that will go a long way helping them be safer drivers.
Drivers ed is extremely important and people should take it
seriously because when you go onto the roads you are putting your
life in the hands of other drivers, and knowing that they are
properly educated on driving safely will make people feel at ease.
