The
amount of deaths due to driving accidents can be minimized if there
were more education opportunities, stricter regulations and laws, and
minimal distractions within a vehicle.

Follow-up
drivers ed courses or online modules to re-evaluate knowledge
of laws and regulations could help to lower deaths due to driving
accidents. By providing more courses to individuals who have been
driving for many years, it would allow for them to freshen their
skills and develop a better understanding of the changes in the laws.
With this newly gained knowledge, the drivers would be able to better
make decisions about driving and the consequences that come with
breaking any traffic laws.

Stricter
regulations and laws would discourage people from driving recklessly
and causing driving accidents. Implementing laws that would enforce
higher penalties for driving under the influence, reckless driving or
any other traffic violation would encourage safer driving due to the
fear of facing major penalties.

Minimizing
the distractions within a vehicle would also lower the number of
deaths. The music being too loud, cell phones, and passengers in a
vehicle all contribute to the rise of deaths due to motor vehicle
accidents. By limiting the volume of music in a vehicle, or making
cell phones inaccessible to the driver, could ensure their focus is
on the road and no other things.

One
of my family’s close friends was in an automobile accident due to
her using her cellphone and sadly the driver of the other vehicle
passed away. She had injuries also, but nothing that was life
threatening. She was charged, went to trial and ultimately, sentenced
to serve a month in jail and was required, as a part of her sentence,
to share her story with others. She has continued to do so by
presenting at high schools and in-front of legislators. This is her
way of ensuring people are educated about distracted driving and how
life altering it can be. She is still deeply saddened by ending a
person’s life and the damage she has inflicted on the family, but
by sharing her story, she is doing her part in educating people about
the effects of distracted driving and car accidents. The hope is to
prevent others from having to deal with the results of distracted
driving by putting their phones down and focusing on driving.
