What is a safe driver

Driving
is a responsibility and a privilege. For some it is even a safe
haven, a way to de-stress or relieve anger. For new drivers, it can
be as scary as skydiving. Majority of the people on the road have
been driving for either a few years or most of their lives. As people
become more comfortable with driving, they usually become more
careless. In 2005, over 40,000 people died due to highway car
crashes. To reduce the number of injuries and fatalities due to car
accidents, the youth needs to be more aware and experienced drivers
need to take more precautions.

The
more educated a young driver is, the more likely they will be to not
experience a car accident. For example, if a less educated driver
begins hydroplaning they might slam on their brakes to gain control
over their car and cause an accident. In 2005, more people died due
to car accidents than during the American Revolutionary War and the
Korean War combined. All drivers are responsible for their own car,
person, and others on the road. An active and aware driver is a safe
driver.

To
reduce the number of car related fatalities, every person needs to
pay attention and take precautions while driving. Everyone should be
making their best effort to make sure that all inspections are
up-to-date, and keep their car a safe environment. Limiting
distractions is one of the best ways to stay safe on the road. This
doesn’t necessarily mean driving in complete silence, it means not
going on your phone, keeping the radio volume relatively low, making
sure your passengers are respectful while you’re driving and knowing
when you should apply your brakes.

Breaking
can be one of the most difficult and technical things about driving.
If you break too soon then you might end up driving slowly for a long
period of time, but if you break too late then you can risk either a
car accident or injury. Last year I was on the bus ride home from
school and everything was completely normal. It was beautiful and
sunny outside, and we reached a regular bus stop where about eight
kids get off and a car crashed into the back of the bus. I was
sitting in the last row so I saw how demolished the car became.
Luckily no one on the bus was injured, but the woman driving the car
was taken to the hospital. She was speeding and distracted by her dog
running around the car and attempted to break too late.

Being
a safe driver is not being a person who doesn’t know how to have fun,
or driving 10 miles per hour under the speed limit. Being a safe
driver is possessing the ability to understand and react properly to
your surroundings. I can be a safer driver by knowing exactly when to
break and how much pressure to apply, and I can help others with
practicing in a safe and helpful environment.
