Behind
the Wheel

On
September 15, 2015 my brother Ryan was pronounced dead. A lady in
Boca Raton, Florida attempted to make an illegal U-Turn. She thought
she could make it. Perhaps she had a meeting and was in a time crunch
and she missed her left turn. Whatever the case may be, the situation
resulted in the death of my just married twenty one year old brother.
Her single careless decision caused the death of an innocent young
man. Im sure the lady had no idea that she was going to take the life
of someone when she left the house. She will forever hold the guilt
of taking another’s life.

When
driving your hands should be at 9 and 3 oclock to ensure your safety
and others around you. Your reckless driving could result in many
deaths not only yours but the people to the left and right of you.
Whether you were sending that last text, switching the station,
speeding up to make sure you don’t miss the light, or even making
that illegal U-Turn. It results in a death or a horrific car
accident. Whether it’s teenagers, young adults, or the elderly the
lack of attention can be fatal.

Most
schools recommend high schoolers to take drivers ed so they can be
informed of the traffic laws. It is an excellent practice for those
who have never driven before. In drivers ed, the instructor makes you
drive on highways, interstates and back roads to get a feel for the
common areas you will go to. They teach you the basics. For example,
if an ambulance is driving by you automatically stop on the side so
they can pass through.

Being
cautious is the safest way to drive. While in the driver’s seat you
take full responsibility for all your actions and the people in the
car with you. Stay in the lanes and drive safely. You never know when
it could be your last. That text can wait, you can turn around within
the next mile, don’t drink and drive, switch the station at the next
light. It can all wait until you reach your destination.
