Driver Education Initiative – Enhancing Knowledge about the Importance of Safe Driving

Drivers
education is crucial for drivers to properly learn on how to drive a
vehicle before getting on the road. Sitting in a classroom
environment learning the skills it takes to be a cautious and safe
driver makes the future driver fully aware of the laws and rules to
abide by. I also believe the student will take the rules more
seriously knowing that there is a test at the end of the class that
determines whether they can drive or not. This could ultimately
reduce the number of deaths in car accidents because there will be
more knowledge on how to deal with situations like bad road
conditions, a broken-down car, dangerous weather, and more.

There
are plenty of steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths
related to driving, but not matter what there will always be tragic
accidents because that is human nature. One step that could be taken
to reduce the number of deaths related to driving is enforcing that
all drivers ed classes be taken in person (remove the
online option) to be assured that the information is being retained
and learned well. I am very lucky to have never been in a car
accident, but I have definitely seen people close to me driving
irresponsibly and it worries me. I am always the person to tell them,
“eyes on the road,” or, “put your phone down” but it scares
me to wonder what might happen if I wasn’t there to say anything.
One thing I always struggle with while driving in the dark is getting
tired. So, I cannot say that I am not guilty of unsafe driving
either. That being said, there is always room for improvement on
everyone’s behalf. Some steps that I will (and have already) taken
to become a better and safer driver are putting my phone in the
passenger seat or center console when driving, this way I do not have
any distractions and cannot even hear or know when I get a
notification. I also look at the directions to where I am going and
put them into my maps before I leave the driveway, so I don’t have
to fiddle with any technology and can focus on traffic and driving
safely. There are not many ways to enforce things like safe driving
because unfortunately there will always be people who think they are
above the law and drive destructively and cause accidents. But I
think enforcing in-person education and raising the consequence for
these actions (more expensive fines, jail time, etc.) this might
scare some people into doing what is right.

One other idea I had to help others become safer on the road was
maybe not only having traffic lights but having audio with them too
at nighttime to keep the driver alert and awake when they might be
sleepy driving. A little sound when they get a green light could
possibly help out and keep people very aware at all times.
