Drivers
Ed. Scholarship

Being
allowed to drive in the U.S. is a privilege that can easily be
revoked if abused. That’s why it is important to have knowledge
about driving safely. Without having this knowledge more and more
people would die just from not having the information needed to keep
them safe. Safety is always important everywhere so why should we not
be safe when driving a big metal death trap. Knowledge of safety is
the most important knowledge a human could have.

The
importance of drivers ed is huge. People need to know how
to be safe when driving so that they can keep themselves and others
around them safe. Nearly 3,287 people die a day from car crashes. If
more people had the knowledge of how to drive safely and actually
applied it to their own driving those numbers could go down
drastically. Something needs to happen.

A
way we can change the average drivers thinking is by showing them
that car accidents can happen to anybody. Schools in the area do a
thing called a mock trial around prom. The school has the local fire
station, police station and the schools S.A.D.D group recreate a car
crash that shows what happens if you drink and drive. This started to
help students realize that drinking and driving is unsafe and it
makes them think twice about going to parties after prom. Only issue
with this is that a lot of the students don’t want to pay attention
and they want to make jokes about it since their friends are the
actors. I think they should have students from different areas do the
acting. They should also have parents come in to act so the students
realize that them making that decision hurts other people. I also
think that these presentations shouldn’t only be given around prom.
I think they should be given at least 3 times a year, maybe more.
This also shouldn’t be only given to students because it’s not
all just the students. A lot of adults don’t drive safe either.

The
only irresponsible thing that people I know have done, is drive
faster than they’re supposed to. The only car accident I have seen
was after a football game a student was driving fast, didn’t stop
at the stop sign and hit my uncle’s truck, who had the right of
way. The student died upon impact. The fact that this happened to my
family made me realize that this can happen to anybody and made me
realize that being unsafe isn’t cool. Being unsafe could mean the
end.

My
experience did scar me for life or make me scared to drive, but
instead made me realize that I need to be safe and be an example for
others. Next time we have a mock trial I can tell the younger kids
who are making fun of it to pay attention because it could happen to
anybody. Maybe then they’ll listen to the presenter.
