One morning, I woke
up to a phone call. It wasn’t one of those exciting phone calls you
get that surprise you and make the rest of your day, it wasn’t
anything like that. It was a devastating phone call. In fact, that
phone call ruined the rest of my day, the rest of my week. It changed
my life. It was earlier that morning that my parents had left the
house embarking on a journey to find the cheapest gas. My mom was in
her car, and my dad was following her in his. The cheapest gas
happened to be fifteen minutes away in a neighboring city. My
parents made it there, acquired the gas and were on their way home
when they were hit by a drunk driver. Stopped at a stop light, my
dad’s car behind my mom’s, my innocent parents had no clue what
was coming next. They didn’t expect a truck to run a red light at
80 miles an hour and hit them. My mom’s car was destroyed and my
dad’s car was close to it. I remember waking up and noticing my
parents were gone. My mind didn’t automatically think the worst,
but eventually it did. I cried, I hollered and I kicked, imagining a
life where I lost both of my parents at the same time. The worst did
not happen, but it easily could’ve. My parents were hit head on by
a sleeping drunk driver. It’s devastating to hear the new
statistics. It blows my mind to think that after all this time, after
all these deaths, there are still reckless drivers. People aren’t
getting the message, and that’s our fault. We need to spread
awareness. There is so much controversy in this world, but there is
one thing we should all be able to agree on: It takes only one
mistake to end a life when you’re behind the wheel. That’s the
message we need to spread. When you’re driving you’re not to be
focused on anything but driving, everything else can wait. That text
can be sent later, you can apply your make-up when you get there, and
you can eat your burger when you get home. Lastly, if you’re
intoxicated, if you are sleepy, if you are on medication, if you’re
angry, sad, or just not in the right state of mind- let someone else
drive. Shake those feelings off before you get behind the wheel. A
reckless driver almost ruined my life. What if the same happened to
you? Don’t be that person that ruins a life. Be kind. Be
considerate. Be smart. Be safe.
