Making
Driving Safer
Driving is an activity many Americans, including myself take part in
every day. Driving has become a necessary part of most Americans’
lives. Unfortunately, it is still considered to be a somewhat
dangerous activity, which leads to many deaths each year. However, if
we all follow some easy steps we can make driving a much safer
experience, and lower the amount of driving accidents, injuries and
deaths.
One step that everyone can easily do to become a safer driver is to
make driving your only focus when you are behind the wheel of a
vehicle. Many unexpected things can occur when you are driving. For
example, the car in front of you might make an abrupt stop, or a deer
might suddenly run across the road. If your focus is not solely on
driving in these scenarios, it could be deadly. Sending that text or
eating that fast food hamburger can wait until you arrive at your
destination.
Another great step to make the driving experience safer for everyone
is to simply drive the speed limit. That speed limit sign is there
for a reason and should be followed. When we speed we may be driving
too fast for the road we are on, or we may endanger pedestrians if we
are driving above the speed limit in an urban area. It is also good
to be aware that the faster your vehicle is moving, the longer it
will take to stop it. Driving the speed limit is another easy step to
becoming a safer driver. We must remember that speed kills.
We also should never drive under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
No matter what the situation is, driving under the influence is
illegal and very dangerous. When you operate a vehicle under the
influence you put your life, and the lives of others at risk. If you
have been drinking there is no shame in getting a cab or asking for a
ride home from a sober friend. We should also raise awareness and
share the dangers of driving while intoxicated with others. Over
10,000 people die each year of a drunk driving related accident. All
of these lives could have easily been prevented by driving
responsibly.
It is also important to share our driving experiences with others.
When something happens to us on the road that we can learn from, we
should inform others of what we learned so they can avoid the
mistakes we made. We also should remind our friends and family to
always obey the traffic laws and make smart decisions when driving.
It is also important to make sure to report any dangerous or reckless
driving to the authorities.
The risks of driving can be lowered substantially if we remember to
follow the steps of safe driving. The more we practice safe driving
and remind others to drive safely, the safer are roads will become.
At any time, our right to drive can be taken away from us if we do
not practice safe driving It is our responsibility to drive in a
manner that keeps everyone safe.
