Being able to drive has always
been a tremendous milestone for a young adult to reach. But there a
plethora of dangers one must be prepared for, many of which are
drowned by the excitement that culminates alongside the newfound
power one possesses. The opportunities personal transportation,
especially a vehicle like a car, provides can be endless, as it opens
new gateways for adventure and growth. The issue arises though as to
whether new drivers have the skills to handle the immense
responsibilities placed upon them. For when one is in control, when
someone is at the wheel, not only one’s own life should be
considered, but also the lives of the multitude of drivers that
commute side by side every day.

An important step that new
drivers, and possibly even veteran drivers, must take is to be
educated on driving. Drivers ed isn’t only to prevent tickets
and fines, but to also teach people how to properly ensure their own
safety when on the road. Now it is no surprise to hear that car
accidents do happen, leaving individuals shaken, injured, or even
dead. But what is surprising is that even though there is countless
data about the causes of accidents, many still look away. That is
where education comes in, a reformation should take place within
drivers ed, a push to adhere to the facts that people do die,
and that though participating in drivers ed is not a full proof
shield to protect oneself when driving, learning the skills on how to
drive can mean the difference between life and death.

The concept of driving holding
a spot on the dividing line of life and death may sound like an
exaggeration, but to a certain degree it is true, and it is also what
is needed to be told during drivers ed. In many cases, the
dangers of distracted and unsafe driving fall on deaf ears. To
compensate for this gap between education and reality, more
retellings of past accidents are necessary in order to open the eyes
of new drivers. Through this practice balance retains an even greater
importance, for the purpose is not to scare potential drivers, but to
communicate real evidence as to why the laws and safety measures for
driving need to be upheld.

Some personal steps that could
be taken to prevent unsafe driving practices would involve constant
reminders alongside daily practices of safe techniques while driving.
In order to help others, communication and assistance are key factors
to supply different options for people to be transported safely.
Whether it be offering a ride to someone who is intoxicated, or by
helping answer the driver’s phone, there are numerous ways for one
to be involved to creating safer driving situations. For in the end,
an individual’s safety, and the safety of others around him or her,
is of utmost importance.
