Death at the Wheel

I see the likes of you everywhere. Young teenagers
and young adults who first get their license and post it on Snapchat
or Instagram celebrating their achievement. What I see is all the
turns and bumps in the road. The black ice, the empty beer can, the
race with your best friend down the empty street out in the country.
I see and hear it all.

You take your driver’s test written and driven. Always following
the rules and being safe; that is until you are free afterward. Free
to do what you want, go where you want, drive as fast as you want.
What you do not see or know is that your fragile life, your gentle
young soul lays within my fingertips. On every turn on a dark road,
you might not slow down. What drivers ed teaches you is how
to use the common sense it is and use it in your life. For your
protection. To use the rules you learn and put them forth in the
world you live in. I will take you when the time comes, but I do not
want to take you from a clumsy accident at the wheel.

When I walk on
the roads that you drive, I see the coolness in having a car amongst
your friends. Why drive fast with a friend in a car just to show off?
Why text and drive when you can wait till later or pull over on the
side? Why drink and drive when you think it is cool, and yet no one
else does? To feel alive is one thing, but to be dead and in my arms
is another Why put yourself and your family through the hardships of
dangerous driving. Be conscientious of yourself and others when
driving for it not only is your own life at stake but others as well.

I have seen the
most horrendous car accidents and crashes your mind can believe. I
see lives slip through my arms only to be carried away by myself,
away from their car, their family. You do not want to see the things
I’ve seen, feel the things I’ve felt because no human should. I
am here not to warn you, but I am here to tell you to listen and see
with your eyes. And feel the contempt in your family’s heart for you.
Their worry of safety for you and all others who drive. Also, we are
not all Allen Iverson where we don’t need to talk about practice.
YES. Driving does take practice, and it will help. Another reason you
should listen to these words; not every day do you get advice from
death.
