Safe
Driving Is No Accident

Every
time a person gets behind the steering wheel, they have the
capability of killing someone. Because of driving, at least 34,000
people die every year. The causes of deaths from driving are endless;
it can be as simple as running a red light or looking at the text
message that was thought to be so important. Within seconds of taking
your eyes off of the road, it can change the course of your life.
This is why drivers ed plays a crucial role in the lives of all
drivers. For most beginning drivers, they rely on their parents to
teach them the skills necessary to become a good driver. However,
they do not have the adequate knowledge of driving like a
professional driving instructor.

Driver
education should be required for all people wanting to get a driver’s
license. Education in general permits the opportunity to expand one’s
knowledge and awareness; therefore, education on the road is just as
important. Drivers ed allows one the opportunity to practice
their driving skills and gain knowledge about how to be a safe
driver. With this, drivers can feel confident about their driving
skills and learn how to overcome difficult driving situations that
may encounter. Another benefit of drivers ed is accepting the
responsibilities of becoming a safe driver. A drivers ed
student is aware of the consequences of unsafe driving and the
importance of cautious driving. This not only benefits the driver,
but everyone else on the road.

On
the other hand, I was involved in a car accident when I was younger.
It was a minor incident, but it still takes a mental and physical
toll on everyone involved in the situation. My family was rear ended
by a young man who was occupied by his phone, rather than paying
attention to the road. However, I have witnessed other traumatic
accidents due to texting and driving or drinking and driving. I
consistently remain cognizant of the fact that there is no text,
drink, or call more valuable than my life or any other person.

It
is imperative that drivers, both inexperienced and experienced,
understand the responsibilities that come with operating a vehicle.
One bad decision can change the course of not only the driver’s
life, but anyone else who may be affected. In order to significantly
diminish the amount of deaths caused by driving, all drivers must
pledge to drive safely and responsibly. I pledge to not text and
drive, keep my eyes on the road, and place my hands on the steering
wheel at all times. Education and awareness are the gateways to
success when it comes to reducing driving deaths. It is imperative
that we take our eyes off of other distractions and remain focused
while on the road. Safe and responsible driving not only ensures your
safety, but everyone else on the road. It is time that we value the
lives of everyone around us; therefore, drive as if every child on
the road is your own.
