Alabama Graduated Driver License (GDL) System
Alabama follows the Graduated Driver License (GDL) system, which helps new drivers gain experience through a three-step process before earning full driving privileges. Here’s how the process works:
- Learner’s Permit (Age 15+)
- At age 15, you can apply for a learner’s permit by passing a vision test and a written exam on Alabama traffic laws and road signs.
- With a learner’s permit, you must always drive with a licensed driver aged 21 or older in the front seat.
- You are required to complete a minimum of 30 hours of supervised driving, including night driving.
- Restricted Driver’s License (Age 16+)
- After holding your learner’s permit for six months and completing the required driving practice, you may apply for a restricted driver’s license at age 16.
- You may drive unsupervised, but there are restrictions: no more than one passenger under age 21 (excluding family members) and no driving between midnight and 6 AM unless for work or school-related activities.
- Unrestricted Driver’s License (Age 17+)
- After holding a restricted license for at least six months without violations, you can apply for a full, unrestricted license at 17.
