How to Get Your Kansas Driver’s License
Kansas follows a Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) system to ensure young drivers gain experience before receiving full driving privileges. Here’s an overview of the steps:
Instruction Permit (Age 14+)
- At age 14, you can apply for an instruction permit after passing a vision and written knowledge test.
- While holding this permit, you must drive with a licensed adult (21+) seated in the front seat.
- You cannot use wireless communication devices while driving, except in emergencies.
Restricted License (Age 15+)
- After holding an instruction permit for at least one year and completing a state-approved driver’s education course, you can apply for a restricted license.
- You may drive unsupervised between 5 AM and 9 PM to school or work.
- You must log 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night.
Full Driver’s License (Age 17+)
- At age 17, you can apply for a full, unrestricted Kansas driver’s license if you’ve held a restricted license for at least 12 months without violations.
