Arizona Graduated Driver License (GDL) System – A Key Focus of Arizona Driver’s Ed

Arizona has a Graduated Driver License (GDL) system to help new drivers gain safe driving experience before earning full driving privileges. Here’s a breakdown of how our Arizona Driver’s Ed course supports each stage:

1. Arizona Instruction Permit (Age 15½+)

  • Teens can apply for an instruction permit at age 15½ by passing a written test on Arizona traffic laws and road signs.
  • With your permit, you can only drive with a licensed driver over age 21 seated in the front passenger seat.
  • During this phase, you’ll need to complete 30 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night, as part of your Arizona Driver’s Ed journey.

2. Arizona Graduated Driver’s License (Age 16+)

  • After holding an instruction permit for at least six months and completing the required driving hours, you can apply for a graduated driver’s license.
  • This license allows you to drive unsupervised but comes with restrictions: no driving between midnight and 5 AM unless for work, school, or family reasons, and no more than one non-family passenger under 18 during the first six months.

3. Unrestricted Driver’s License (Age 18+)

At 18, you can apply for a full, unrestricted Arizona driver’s license if you’ve successfully completed the GDL requirements.
