Arkansas Graduated Driver License (GDL) System – Key Steps in Arkansas Driver’s Ed

Arkansas uses the Graduated Driver License (GDL) system to help new drivers develop skills and experience before earning full driving privileges. DMVEdu’s Arkansas Driver’s Ed course is designed to support this process:

1. Arkansas Instruction Permit (Age 14+)

  • Teens can apply for an instruction permit at 14 by passing a written test on Arkansas traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices.
  • While holding an instruction permit, you must drive with a licensed adult (age 21 or older) seated in the front passenger seat.
  • This phase of your Arkansas Driver’s Ed journey is crucial for building foundational driving skills.

2. Intermediate License (Age 16-18)

  • After holding an instruction permit for at least six months and completing 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night, you may apply for an intermediate license.
  • Intermediate license holders face restrictions, such as no driving between 11 PM and 4 AM unless for school, work, or emergencies, and no more than one non-family passenger under 21.

3. Full Unrestricted Driver’s License (Age 18+)

  • At 18, you may apply for a full, unrestricted Arkansas driver’s license after successfully completing the GDL requirements and maintaining a clean driving record.
