Alaska Graduated Driver License (GDL) System – A Key Focus in Alaska Driver’s Ed

Alaska uses the Graduated Driver License (GDL) system to help new drivers gain safe driving experience before receiving full driving privileges. Our Alaska Driver’s Ed course supports this system by providing the knowledge and skills needed to succeed at each stage:

  1. Alaska Instruction Permit (Age 14+) – Start Your Alaska Driver’s Ed Journey
  • Teens can apply for an Alaska instruction permit at 14 by passing a vision and written knowledge exam on Alaska’s traffic laws and road signs.
  • You must drive with a licensed adult (21 years or older) in the front seat while holding your permit.
  • You’ll also need to complete 40 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours of night driving, during this phase of your Alaska Driver’s Ed journey.
  1. Alaska Provisional License (Age 16+) – Advance Through Alaska Driver’s Ed
  • After holding your instruction permit for at least six months and completing the required practice driving hours, you can apply for an Alaska provisional license at age 16.
  • Provisional license holders may drive unsupervised but face restrictions: no driving between 1 AM and 5 AM, and only one non-family passenger under 21 is allowed unless accompanied by a licensed adult.
  1. Full Unrestricted License (Age 18+) – Complete Your Alaska Driver’s Ed Experience
  • After holding your provisional license for six months without any traffic violations, you can apply for a full, unrestricted Alaska driver’s license at age 18, completing your Alaska Driver’s Ed experience and gaining full driving privileges.
