Connecticut Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) System
Connecticut uses a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system to ensure teens gain safe driving experience before earning full driving privileges. Here’s how the system works:
1. Connecticut Learner’s Permit (Age 16+)
- Teens can apply for a learner’s permit at age 16.
- Requirements:
- Pass a vision test and written knowledge test at the DMV.
- Complete at least 30 hours of classroom or online driver education, including 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed instructor.
- Restrictions:
- Permit holders must always drive with a licensed adult (age 20+) who has held a license for at least 4 years.
2. Connecticut Provisional License (Age 16½ – 18)
- After holding a learner’s permit for at least 120 days (or 180 days without driver education), teens can apply for a provisional license.
- Restrictions:
- No passengers under age 20, except immediate family, for the first 6 months.
- No driving between 11 PM and 5 AM, except for school, work, or emergencies.
3. Full Unrestricted License (Age 18+)
At age 18, or after holding a provisional license for 1 year without violations, teens can apply for a full driver’s license, with all restrictions lifted.
*Please note, if you are taking this course to fulfill your Driver Education Requirements, please confirm with your high school that they will accept our completion certificate. Your high school will be responsible for providing you with the driver’s education completion certificate in order to sign up for driving lessons and take your permit test.
